about

A Japanese-Romanian Wooden Blues

Parallels meet in the infinite. (Bolyai)

The sound of the Japanese Zen Buddhist Han and the sound of the Romanian Christian Orthodox Toacă (Semantron) had always fascinated me. Both are very special and simple wooden percussion instruments used near churches or in monasteries to summon the monastics and lay people to prayer, meditation or at the start of a procession. Playing these instruments by nameless monks is a performance art tradition passed down from master to student and are mirroring the teachings and the culture in which they are rooted. They are very similar and very different at the same time – just like the guys who are at the core of these spiritual traditions.

The Japanese HAN was recorded in a zen Buddhist monastery in Germany. I recorded the Romanian TOACA next to an Orthodox Christian church in Romania.
